The Bet (1/2)

Paul and Tim were on the walkway, second floor usual spot hanging arms and heads over the edge smoking and bullshit and waiting. Waiting for the action to come to them. Paul and Tim were people watchers. Paul and Tim also liked to gamble.
“Hot out here.” Paul wiped sweat from his forehead and pulled on the neck of the beer. Fucking Texas.
“Nobody’s even out today. Maybe tonight there’ll be some action.” Tim needed the action. They both did. Anything at all would do. Wife out for a walk with the dog, maybe. Girls from the college down the way. Probably too hot out for any of them. Even the bums were holed up in the cool spots waiting for the sun to go down. Too bad, the bums were usually good for a bet or two. But the bums knew best about staying cool.
Not Paul. Not Tim either. They drank their beers outside and slowly, letting them get hot before the end and they’d just dump that last hot sip down the drain and not mind one bit about cracking open the next one. The bums saw this sometimes and hated them for it. They knew about waste and want. Bums were the kings of recycling. They knew what it was before it was anything. They were ahead of the law on that one at least.
“Nothing’s gonna happen. Let’s go see what’s on the TV.”
“No, man. It’s the fifteenth. He’ll be home soon. We’ve got to see what he got.”
“Oh yea…”
They didn’t know his name so they called him Pete. He wasn’t what you’d call a real sociable guy. He’d say hello if you said it first, but he could walk right by you like he didn’t even see you if you kept quiet. Paul was pretty sure that if you were in his way and didn’t speak he might just run right into you. Pretty sure Pete would just look around surprised and wonder what he’d hit.
“So what’s the bet?”
“Case of beer for the weekend?” That was the usual.
“You bet.”
“All right then. What’s your pick?” This was the tricky part. It helped to keep your eye out for him during the week. They didn’t know what he did but it wasn’t regular work. At least not a certain time five days a week. Sometimes he’d be gone nine or ten days in a row and sometimes he’d be home for a week. Maybe he worked the oilrigs out west or something.
The better the week before, the more likely he’d stay home longer the next one. Pete was not, apparently, motivated by the dollar.
“Well,” Tim thought, “he was gone most of last week I think, and didn’t we decide he got paid the week after?”
“Yep.” They found this out because it was the only time Pete checked his mail. If he didn’t work one week, he wouldn’t check his mail the next. That little piece of information had won Paul more than a few bets before Tim caught on. After that it was down to luck. Pete kept changing everything; the kind of liquor he drank, the brand of it. He’d drink bourbon for a month but change the brand every week or maybe the next time he’d come back with something different entirely. He never drank gin though. Not even with a mixer. At least not yet. Sometimes he even drank wine, but never on a payday. The beer he brought home was for breakfast, they knew. He drank beer like most people drank orange juice.
Paul had gone so far as to check out the liquor store on paydays to see what they had on sale that day, hoping it would give him an edge. Pete almost always bought the cheapest stuff they had. Pete was, apparently, not a flavor man.
“McCormack’s.” Tim finally guessed. “Case of McCormack’s Vodka.” It was a safe bet. That and Old Grand Dad’s whiskey had been the favorites for the month.
“Vodka, huh?”
“Yep, case of vodka.” Tim took another pull on his beer and wondered about his guess.
“I’m going with the whiskey.” Whiskey was a rough bet. You had to get the brand right, but you also needed the right label. Most whiskeys were ok, but Jim Beam and a few others had like three or four kinds, and that got rough. Choices, of course, narrowed based on estimated income. Jim Beam Black Label was usually out, but the kicker was the rye. Rye was cheap usually since no one drank that shit, but white label was about the same usually.
Anyway, you get the idea.
“What kind?” Tim knew he had to ask or Paul would pull some bullshit if he lost the label.
“Whiskey River.” Shit, the Willie Nelson booze. Good guess. It was just after the Fourth of July and Willie had just had that big picnic to celebrate. Pete was a man who appreciated things like that. Last Christmas Pete came home with a bottle of fucking eggnog and screwed them both. Wild Turkey last Thanksgiving. He must not have liked it too much since they found remnants of it all over the bushes under his part of the walkway every morning for a week. Of course Pete threw up a lot no matter what. He was like a fucking rooster at dawn with his fucking hangover wake up call. Fucking clockwork.
But that stuff was a little pricey. Tim wondered if Paul had a man inside, so to speak. Well fuck, he’d let the tale tell itself, as they say.
“It’s a bet.” They shook on it and waited. It might take a while, so Paul went back in for more beers.
“This one’s fucking hot all ready.” He said before he went for more, dumping the last of it on to the ground ten feet below.
“Yep, mine too. Too fucking hot out.” Tim agreed. “Grab me one while you’re there?” Paul nodded in agreement.
